All in all it was a great night for many of our instructors and for our schools.
In the past few months I've been involved with some young men who are trying to make their mark in the MMA
world. I want to thank Sensei Devan Plaisance for allowing me to be a part of his team and school. Devan and his father Larry
are very good friends that I've known ever since Devan started training with us nearly 20 years ago.
Devan has opened up a MMA school in the Halls area and in watching him teach over the last few months, I'm
very pleased in how he's grown not only as a student of the Martial Arts but as an instructor.
It seems like 10 years ago we were having sport karate tournaments every weekend, now they've been replaced
by full contact cage fighting events. I believe this shows where we are as a society with all of the so called extreme sports
now becoming mainstream. The biggest knock I have on MMA training and Cage fighting is that most of the competitors that I've
been around have no martial arts training or the discipline that comes with it. The majority of guy's I see competing in the
cage events are just guy's who like to fight or want to take that extreme challenge for the rush of entering the cage. I enjoy
being around the fight game but I wonder how many of these guy's competing in the cage are going to be involved in any form
of martial arts 30 or 40 years from now like many of Marial Artist's that I 've known over my 30 years.
I also want to thank Master Joe Hess for his time spent with our group on Sept 18. Master Hess is on of
those guy's I was speaking about above. Master Hess like Master Mills has made a lifetime work of the martial arts. I'm just
waiting to see how long this new breed of martial artist's will stay around to share their knowledge with the world.
